Dear Listers,

Could sks please help with occ's CARMAN and COMMERCIAL CLERK. I have an ancestor with a common name so the only way I thought to ensure it was the right one was to check the occupation. On his daughters marriage certificate he is down as a COAL PORTER. In the 1881 census there are two of the same name with the above occ's. This is ten years earlier so I suppose things could have changed. His name is THOMAS SMITH. His daughter is CAROLINE. both Thomas's have a daughter Caroline so it has got a bit confusing. It looks like I may have to keep paying out for certs till I find one that I like. :-))
(I thought the Carman was my best bet - what do you think??)
