Hi Derek,
Your next step is to get John Alfred' birth certificate. This will show his
mother's maiden name and enable you to start searching for their marriage
cert.
When you have some definitely alive in 1881 then request a look up in the
census of that year.

the 6th March 1912 at St. Mary's Church, Heworth, County Durham on the 6th
July 1935.They then lived in London and the last address I have for them was
58 Victoria Rise, Clapham, London SW4. If anybody has any information on the
above I would be really pleased to hear from you.
