definition of gutta percha from Lloyds Encyclopediac Dictionary pub 1895
A white substance obtained by treating gutta percha with boiling water and
allowing the filtrate to cool. the gutta is then deposited and again boiled
with ether til the etherial solution retains nothing in solution on cooling.
By dry distillation it yeilds hydrocarbons. The part of the gutta percha
removed by the ether consists of albam and fluavil, which are oxidized gutta
The raw gutta percha arrives in this country in lumps weighing from 5 to 6
pounds. These are cut into slcies, torn to shreds and thrown into cold
water, when the impurities sink and the pure gum rises to the surface. Then
the shreds are transferred to hot water, and finally, they are made into
solid masses, from which the moisture is driven out by kneading.
Gutta percha is used for makingles of boots impervious to water, for door
handles, ear trumpets etc. It is made into bottles to contain hydofluric
acid, and it is not acted upton by that acid. Above all it is employed for
coating submarine telegraph wires, partly to protect them from salt water,
partly to insulate them, gutta percha being a decided non condutor of
electricity.
Forms for the ordinary printing press taken with gutta percha. An intalgio
impression is taken from the form. This when cold, forms a matrix for
obtaining a cameo gutta percha impression which is used in the press
Chemical: The insipissated juice of Isonandra gutta, the gutta percha tree.
It occurs in tough flexible pieces of a light brown colour which are soluble
in benzene, choloform and bisulphide of carbon, insoluble is water, and only
slightly soluble in alchohol and ether. In hot coutnries it is liable to be
oxidised by the action of the air and loses its flexibility"
Hope that helps!!
