All this pie and mash business is getting on my wick! But just for the
record, in case nobody else has mentioned it, when I was a child living in
Brixton, there used to be a pie and mash shop in Coldharbour Lane, just down
from Woolworth's and the Prince of Wales, opposite Cussens the clothes shop
where my mum used to buy my dresses. My dad used to like going in there for
pie and mash, whenever he took me out, but I never fancied it myself. To me
it always smacked of Sweeny Todd the Barber, being just a little girl, and
the sight of all that liquor with a greenish hue put me off even more. I
much preferred their sausage and mash.
My idea of a treat was candy floss when it came freshly made on a stick and
cost sixpence old money, and not sweating inside a plastic bag for a £1 or
more like it does these days! And toffee apples made with clear toffee and
proper apples that didn't taste fluffy when you bit into them!!
Just incase you think I must be centuries old to remember that far back,
I haven't even reached fifty yet... not for a few more years, anyway!
Every blessing,
Christine
