Hi Donna,
There was a London watch in the 13th Century, membership and jurisdiction
extended until the 19th Century when an improved Police system was
established, introduced by Mr. Robert Peel, later Sir, and in 1839 it was
extended to other parts of the country. The first policemen were known as
Peelers. --This was taken from a 1928 edition of Pears' Cyclopaedia.
