Yes, I was in a similar position, although researching from Scotland, but
regularly visiting Bristol, discovered by chance that Bristol Central
library had the BMD fiches (they have them up until the 1980s or 1990s)

I since found out about the familia web site which is useful in this respect
www.earl.org.uk/familia
or go through www.genuki.org.uk

Of course all the old hands will know this, but it sometimes takes a while
for us newbies to suss these things out.

but anyway. I was amazed and thrilled to discover that libraries in two
towns near where I live have copies of the BMD (St Caths) indexes (from
1837-1940) on fiche. Also the 1881 census for the whole of England on
fiche. I only discovered this by a chance remark during a phone call, and
it has saved me a great deal of time and effort, as I thought I would have
to travel to London to get this information. So if you live outside London,
ring your library, you may be lucky, as I was.
