Hi Maureen,
I have had great success finding second cousins and this is how I did it.
1) Local LDS family history centre for the Birth, Marriage and Death
indexes, to find out when and who they married, what children they had etc.
and get the family tree as up to date as possible. Take good note of
registration districts. After 1912, it's easy as spouses' surnames appear
on marriage indexes, and mother's maiden name on birth indexes. My local
LDS has these up to 1983.
2) Log onto BT's website for directory enquiries. Pick the rarest name(s)
in the family tree and search the areas in which family were born, married
or died. (You search by county, as per telephone directories.)
3) Screw your courage up and phone if you are in the UK, saves all the
nail-biting wait for replies.
My 2nd cousins were overjoyed to be contacted and we have had a great time
comparing notes. It's got so infectious that one of them is now locating
other 2nd cousins in the family. and these small, fragmented family groups
are now becoming a huge clan.
Good luck.

Can someone help me please? I'm researching my Winch ancestors and would
like to get in contact with my second cousin Eileen Archer, whose mother was
Emily Winch.
