Dear Anne,
There were four churches dedicated to St Botolph in the City of London,
three of which still survive.
St Botolph without Billingsgate (destroyed in the Great Fire)
St Botolph without Aldgate
St Botolph without Aldersgate
St Botolph without Bishopsgate
Often the without is not included in the name.
St Botolph is the English patron saint to travellers and quite naturally
his churches are located at the edge of the city, at a gate in the wall,
where travellers could prey for a goods journey or give thanks for
arriving safely. The churches were outside the wall hence the without.
Have a look at my web site where you will find a link to the Churches of
the City of London. The three existing churches are shown and there is a
write up and picture.
