Hello all,
Two guys, Barry Kitchener and Dave Warren are planning a book about the men
and women who lost their lives in the railway industry during the First
World War.
They would like to compile a history of every fallen railway company
serviceman or woman and a complete list of railway memorials .
An example:
Kings Cross memorial, the name Sapper G E Johnson appears. In 1918, while
serving in the Royal Engineers, he was working at an ammunition dump, when a
truck caught fire. Sapper Johnson helped to couple it to the loco, but the
wagon exploded, killing him and two others. The London Gazette reported that
"without his involvement there is not the slightest doubt that the whole
dump would have been destroyed and many lives lost".
They would welcome any information about railway staff who died in both
world wars, including photographs.
Do you have any railway ancestors in your family who fought in the Great
Wars. Barry can be contacted on email at
Please contact these guys as it could be a useful resource to us all. I have
sent this message to the Sussex, Surrey, Berks and Kent lists, please feel
free to pass this on to any other lists.
