This was one of the two main London evening newspapers, the other being
the Standard. There was a third the Star, which seemed to vanish
earlier. The cry was 'Starnewstandud!' I think only the Evening
Standard remains, having steadily eaten up the others.
The 'evening' is a misnomer, since the first edition tended to appear
at about midday.
I think the copies would have to be sought at the Newspaper Library,
Colindale - they would do a photocopy if they had an exact date, but
would not search all the issues even for a year (365/6 of them. )
1946 or after sounds about right. The barrow boys were often in
tropuble with the law for obstructing the pavement, by selling goods
without an official pitch/ If they saw the policeman coming, the shut
their cases and moved on (they didn't necessarily have actual barrows,
which were stalls in the regular market, but laid out a case or tray
full of goods on the pavement.
