But of course, all of these records are kept on computers - which means
they'll probably not be able to be read by any of the new fancy gadgets
that'll be around in 100 years. I mean who can now read a disk made by a
TRS-80 in 1978 or an Apple II in 1977??
So I can see people who's hobbies are restoring ancient computers just to
read old records! - Kind of like transcribing hand written ones.

I don't think that they'll have the same problem as we do. We are chasing
after people who maybe didn't write their names, or had them written, on
more than a dozen bits of paper in a whole lifetime. We, on the other hand,
leave our marks all over the place dozens of times a day. Come 2102, if the
World is still in orbit around our sun, there'll be one B great database of
our movements day by day. Sainsburys and Tescos etc already note which of
their stores we use and what we buy and when. Then there are doctors' and
hospital files, local and national government files, what books we took out
of the library and, of course, where and when and how much money we spent on
our holidays.
Genealogy may mean nothing more in 2100 than spitting on a bit of glass,
swiping our personal 64 Terrabyte intelly card and waiting for the printer
(I'll bet we'll still spend a hell of a lot of
time waiting for printers.) to produce a complete 40 generation family tree.
