After a few days away, I returned to find 64 replies to my queries regarding Hermes Street and "what is/was a carman"? It is too many to reply to individually, so, please, I thank you all for taking the trouble to contact me with so many helpful suggestions and so much information. I think geneaologists must be the most helpful people in the world. Jusdt an additional request. I have since discovered that my carman uncle was connected with the L.N.E.R. (London and North Eastern Railway) andI am wondering why a railway company would need a carman. If a carman moved things by horse and cart (this was pre-World War I) what would he be moving for a railway company? Or am I completely misunderstanding? Puzzled, but hopeful (I bet one of you knows the answer) Olive
