Further to another question dealing with the BMD certificates, I believe
that it is possible to order copies of certificates through the LDS. The
following is from another digests questions and answers:
"My original purpose was to get the data to order a photocopy of my
GGgfather's death register from LDS at Salt Lake City, and that is what I
now plan to proceed with. Several Listers kindly offered suggestions on
other avenues I might pursue, usually suggesting that instead I get a
certificate in one form or another from GROS. Following is a summary of
information which came out of the discussions.
First, some Listers seem not aware that photocopies can be ordered by mail
very cheaply from the LDS in Salt Lake City. Forms are available at each
FHS Library. The cost is $2US for 8 prints, including return postage.
Second, some Listers seem to think that the LDS records are somehow
different than or secondary to those of GROS. Please note that the
microfilms held at GROS were made for them by LDS and are EXACTLY the same
as those held by LDS. And the film numbers are the same, since they were
made by LDS.
Third, several Listers suggested getting certified extracts from GROS. These
are expensive and unnecessary unless you need a certified copy for some
legal reason.
Fourth, several Listers suggested getting non-certified copies or extracts
from GROS. These are cheaper, but still many times the cost of the ones
available from Salt Lake City. I have been ordering such certificates for
about 35 years and have found that in about half the cases I have received a
photocopy of the pertinent record, but the other half have been re-typed
"extracts". I believe that the extracts are made when the photocopy isn't
sufficiently clear. Unfortunately, these are the very ones for which I
believe that it is important to get a photocopy and make your own educated
analysis of the record (and not rely on the interpretation of someone who
may be hurried and who may not be familiar with the spellings of names and
places). In addition, from GROS you get only the pertinent record, whereas
from LDS you get the entire page (or pages) on which the record occurs, and
therefore get to see "the neighbours". These can then be shared with your
List-mates!"
The above was submitted by someone in Canada. Is it possible to order the
Certificates this way if you are in Britain? If it is possible for the
Certificates to be ordered from the LDS in Britain, does anyone know how you
can get the required form to submit your request for certificates? Do you
have to get it from the LDS Centre or can it be downloaded from the LDS web
site?
If the service is available to us in Britain it would certainly be very
useful in that it is a very large saving compared to using the PRO system.
Looking forward to a reply being posted on the List so that everyone can
share it.
Steve
