About eight years ago, after making several phone calls to St John's in Hampstead, I managed to make an appointment to view the records there. The secretary produced the registers, from a safe I think, and I was begrudgingly allowed to read them and make notes. It was winter. The secretary wore a long thick skirt, a woolly jumper and long cardigan, and knitted gloves with the fingers cut off! I wore my winter coat. I needed the fingers left in my gloves for later! The electric fire was directed towards the secretary.
