Hello List Researchers,
The things you find exist when you participate! I suppose there must be a
directory for almost everything but it had not occurred to me that this one
was around. Since it seems so could SKS please point me in the direction of
The Empress of Hackney?
This was a private bus company about 1910. ('Pirate' bus company in the
parlance of the day).
I believe it was run by a Tom STANTON. My late father found a job with the
company as a signwriter, when he first came to London from Somerset. This may
have been through family connections as his mother was nee Stanton. On some
of the 1850-1890 censuses for her home with her TAYLOR aunt and uncle there
are other Stantons shown: these from Poplar. So she could have been a
Londoner rather than the West Country lass we have always thought her.
