I think that what you have to beware of is that the information gathered in
Trade Directories and other publications does not necessarily take place at
the same date as the publication appears in print (looking at the 1902 PO
Directory for London, it is clear that this would be an impossibility!).

Also as Eve keeps hammering home, folk didn't necessarily stay in one place
for long. The property-owning-democracy is a pretty modern phenomenom, and
in 1851 only a tiny proportion would have owned their home - or even thought
that there was any merit in doing so. So its a game of musical houses with
folk bumping into each other in the middle of the day, or night, as they
trundle their possessions round the corner in order to give another rent
collector the headache.

In short, it isn't necessarily an error in either the census or in the
directory.

And remember that our ancestors didn't have the slightest inkling that 150
years later their ancestors would be looking for 'em, even after the rent
man had given up.

Keep smiling,
Adrian C Whittaker, in Gravesend, Kent.

although according to it my Thomas RISHWORTH was at 30 Westbourne Terrace,
according to the Index to the 1851 census he is not there, so I am back at
square one with this family after a brief moment of euphoria. What is the %
of mistakes on censii and their indexes?. At what intervals did these PO
Directories come out and what records are there apart from the census that
give family details, anything??.This family always seems to be one step
ahead of me all the way, if I didn't know better I would say they were
hiding on purpose!!!
