Steve
Personally I would like to see any Profits made from the 1901 census go
to produce an on line 1841 census.

According the PRO web site they have set the system up to handle 1 million
people each day but peaked at 1.2 million within the first few hours.
Hence most people appear to be having problems. But what the heck just think
how the PRO and their partners feel.
1 million visitors per day; lets be conservative and say 10% order further
details @ 50p = £50,000 lost every day so far!
They could have easily set up a mirror data centre for that!
I also notice that the Family Records Centre are not getting a copy of the
fiche. When they combined the GRO and the PRO sites I thought is was to
provide a single
location for information. Now they are splitting it again. Why? Money.
I'm going to write to my MP and request that income from the 1901 census
project is used to reimburse us the public for the cost of the 2001 census,
after all at some
time in the future our descendants will have to fork out to check out the
indexes!
