Was the prohibition about marrying the deceased wife's sister ever
"overlooked" for the upper crust? I have a many times great grandfather
(in 1737) who married his dead wife's sister.

Not just for the upper crust - I had two perfectly ordinary non-upper-crust
3gt-aunts who were sisters and they married the same man in the 1860s in
Devon. Mind you I haven't been able to locate the death of the first one
though. Hmm....
