The "once removed" is correct, but the original query is in effect
saying "his g.grandfather was my gg. grandfather": that makes them
second cousins once removed.

[If the gg.grandfather had been g.grandfather then they would have been
second cousins (the additional g is where the "removed" comes from).
First cousins share grandparents; second cousins share g.grandparents. I
hope that makes sense!]
