Thanks Dian I have never considered my Grandfather may have served in India - its just possible as 1881 is a v. likely date for when he was in the army. I will certainly check.
I don't think the Natl.Army Museum at the Royal Hospital Rd. Chelsea would be of any help, he wasn't pensioned but bought out twice - or in my opinion perhaps he went awl the second time. He certainly had something to hide.
