Tapers are long thin wax (or tallow) covered rods, used for lighting
lamps, church candles etc. They were made either at home or (later) in
places like Price's Candle Factory in S London) and were sold boxed or
bundled in 6s or 12s. Some one had to wait till they were cool and firm,
and sort out sets of even lengths, and then pack them.
