Subject: [Lon] Confusion of census lookups

Hello Liz,
I do hope I haven't put you off asking for help on the list. I was just
stating the reasons why some lookups don't get a reply. I too am on a
fixed income, but since I managed to get to an LDS centre, and viewed a
film of the 1841 census, I myself am very wary of asking for lookups
because it was such a tedious task, the constant winding the film
coupled with the difficulties in reading it anyway.
That said though, there's a lot you can find out for free. Have you
investigated the lookup exchanges for the areas you are interested in.
On these sites, generous people who have purchased resources for their
own research, offer to do a lookup for others. I do this with resources
that I have for Suffolk and Glamorgan. There is also the Random Acts of
Genealogical Kindness (RAOGK) site, volunteers offer their services to
others.
Some of the Family History Societies have partial indexes for free on
their websites, I have seen indexes of marriage witnesses, directories,
etc on FHS sites. Do investigate the FHS webpages, they're usually a
mine of information, and you will find out what areas have been indexed,
which makes a lookup much easier and more possible. What I'm saying is
this, do explore further than the marvelous mailing lists (what would we
do without them) because there's a lot of information out there.
I have purchased the 1851 census index for Croydon and Mitcham, and
lookups for others take almost no time at all, so find out what is
available in your areas of interests. Most of all, do not give up. <G>
Best wishes.

I am sorry to have bothered people in requesting a look up, I didn't
realize
that it would be such a problem. Unfortunately for me, with where I live
and
fixed income, it is next to impossible for me to order these census, and
thus that is why I was hoping that someone had it and was willing to
share. But I thank you for taking the time in answering my confusion!
