Hello Jenny
There are many theories as to how the Isle of Dogs got its name but the most
popular one is that the royal kennels were kept there at one time.
It used to be known as Stepney Marsh until it was drained off around the
13/14thC. The first official recording of the name Isle of Dogs is on a late
16thC map but some folks think the mapmaker was just being nasty and
derogatory. We will probably never know!
