Thanks for the suggestion, Sheila. I suppose this is a possibility,
although Great-grandmother still managed to have another baby every 2 years
between 1880 and 1901! If Samuel did pass along, or abandon the family, she
certainly wasted no time in replacing him!

Was there any sort of tax or law at that time against the poor who bore more
children than they could afford? Mum has suggested that perhaps Samuel
needed to use an alias lest he be fined for having too many children!? They
were dreadfully poor, living in the East End.

Jill, perhaps the explanation is that she did have a different father. Is
it possible that Samuel died sometime between 1891 and 1901 census and his
widow married again - maybe a relative of her deceased husband's, who was
the father of your grandmother - Sheila
