We painted our front doorstep a sort of rusty red colour. Then we cleaned
it. I'd often wondered what that was all about..............

Well I still wash my doorstep down each morning - not hands and knees
scrubbing, more a bucket of hot soapy water and the broom, and mainly
because of unscrupulous dog owners who allow their pets to cock their legs
on my gate post!! I think it is also partly from habit - that was my job
when I was small, so I have just continued it on - also washing the windows
on a Saturday morning vinegar to stop the streaks and scrunched up newspaper
to bring up the shine :-) My window cleaner says that those are old wives
tales, but I reckon I could still do a better job than him!
As for eating in the street my grandma would have a fit if she saw the kids
today - we were told that was the height of bad manners.
