There are no hard and fast rules regarding starting a one-name study.
The name itself implies collecting all info regarding a particular name. You
can do this yourself and become quite an expert in a singular family name,
as I have. You can register your study with GOONS ( Guild of One Name
Studies) there is a fee attcahed and I believe they expect you to hold
certain records as a minimum basis for the study eg the IGI entries for your
family and the GRO entries
As an example of the type of thing you might need to hold to be really
serious about it I have for my Keillor study
GRO indexes 1837 - present
SRO indexes 1855 - present
IGI entries for UK and USA
1881 census entries
1891 census entries
1901 census entries
a good swag of entries from the other non-indexed censuses
Indexes to probate and wills in UK
Calander of Confirmations Scotland
The list goes on, not to mention thousands of parish register and
certificate transcriptions
The bottom line is, you have to be prepared to collect every snippet of info
regarding your study name. Then you are a one-name study......

The talk of One-Name Studies has awakened an old curiosity. I have
recently checked Rootsweb's list of One-Name Studies and there seems not
to be one for CLARKSON. I thought this a little strange since I've been
led to believe this is a not uncommon surname. What exactly is required
to launch a One-Name Study? I presume it must be registered somewhere,
but what exactly is the regimen after that? I believe some of you out
there (Josi I know for sure) are carrying on such studies and in addition
to the above information, I would be interested to know if it has proved
greatly helpful in finding information on your own family's history.
