Did he join or did he transfer,

If he joined it could be for any number of reasons. Men could choose and the
reasons for their choices were as varied as the reasons why many people
today work in an area that isn't where they are originally come from. There
is a famous example of a man from London who joined the Durham Light
Infantry because it gave him the opportunity for a long train ride!

If he was transferred it could be that he was in one of the battalions that
were broken up in late 17 early 18 as re-inforcements for other battalions,
(Haig & Lloyd George fell out so Haig was running out of men)
