The IGI should be checked for any BUTT references. There are odd
references:

Mr BUTTS with a house in the parish of St. Antholin
('Inhabitants of London in 1638', T.C.Dale SoG, London 1931)

John BUT living in Hornsey
(Middlesex Protestant Oath Rolls 1641/2)

South of the Thames, in the county of Surrey, there is a number of BUTTs
in the Surrey Lay Subsidy Rolls of 1593/4 (taxes!):
