I see that in the 1881 census 78 individuals had the christian name BEDFORD!
Hundreds of people have it as a surname. It may be that some way back there
was an intermarriage with a family named Bedford and it so it was adopted as
a first name which then stuck. Or it could be that there was a family
association with the town or county of Bedford.

In my own case, the surnames of several families which married into my
Pennell family were adopted as christian names and were then passed on down
the generations (eg. Lovell, Follett, Montague).
