Hi Jeanette

Have you looked in the GRO index of Births at sea? (BDMs which took place
on British ships were required to be registered by the Captain, on return to
England.) The indexes for BDMs at sea are separate from the general indexes.

I don't know where you live, but imagine that Auckland Public Library would
have these indexes. National Library in Wellington certainly has.

Good luck!

Charlie

My g grandfather Thomas William Portland SMITH was born at sea in May1841,
and his birth appears not to have been registered, although we've found his
baptism in St.Thomas Stepney in October
of 1841. .......It wouldn't be much help if he had been registered under his
mother's maiden
name as I don't know what it was - that's part of the information I'd like
to get from his birth certificate! If I did I could start on her line and
get away from the SMITHs!!
