G'day Josi et al
I had been puddling around (not too successfully) with
tracing my ancestors, and finally kidded my reluctant wife into going with
me to spend an afternoon in the library engaged in the exciting perusal of
micro-film. However, to my amazement, "she who must be obeyed" declared that
she was bored. As a result, she began wandering around looking at various
books etc, finally settling down for a read of an old copy of the GRD. A
short time passed and she announced that she had found someone interested in
my family name of OAKES. I explained that the name was fairly common in some
areas such as Shropshire, but mine were from Middlesex and seemed fairly
thin on the ground. She insisted that this person was researching christian
names that she was sure she'd heard me mention, so I checked and was
delighted to find that she was correct, we copied the email address and
later mailed the person concerned. Just a few short hours later, we received
a reply from a very excited distant cousin, who informed me that he was
directly descended from the brother of my grt grt grandfather, we have
exchanged information, and 3 members of my family have met with him and his
family, just as my wife and I hope to do so, sometime later this year. So a
boring afternoon in the library supplied me with living family in England,
and him with a whole slew of rellies down here in Australia and destroyed a
couple of brick walls at the same time.
Regards

never in the field of human endeavor have so many
worked so hard for so little.
I don't know who said it, but he knew a thing or three.
How about some life enhancing stories of all the break thru's
romances, serendipity's and magical moments out there
in Family History.?
