Barbara

I too remember the smog. When going to and from school my brothers and I
wore scarves around out mouths to stop us breathing the smog fumes. We
would never allow our Gran out of the house because of this and we were all
very worried about our Dad, in case he became ill - he was in his 50s then,
but he was 81 years when he passed away, so obviously the smog didn't get
him. When the smog was really bad we would walk home from high school - our
school was in Townsmead Road, near Wandsworth Bridge - to our house in
Fulham. We knew all the street names so we had no trouble crossing roads -
the buses would be travelling at about 5mph - in fact we would get home
before the bus arrived at the top of the road.
