I have been researching my Crow family for a number of years now and with
the help of a distant Cousin have tracked them down to Hackney where Thomas
and Elizabeth Crow nee Hancock lived from there marriage in 1811 untill
there death.
Thomas Crow was born in approximately 1785 estimated from the date and his
age on his death certificate.(Born Hackney ??)
In the baptism records for Hackney there are the following records of births
to a John and Elizabeth Crow.
1780 Jennett "Portsmouth" Crow
1783 William Crow
1785 Thomas Crow,(possibly my Thomas Crow, gggGrandfather )
The middle name of Portsmouth just struck me as a strange middle name to
give a child and the only explanation I could think of was that possibly her
mother Elizabeth was called Elizabeth Portsmouth prior to her marriage to
John Crow.?
Has any other lister come across this type of naming pattern, eg. giving
the Mothers Maiden name as one of the childrens middle names or could there
be another explanation.
My final question, ( Thank goodness for that I hear you cry !!)
Is any other lister researching either the surname Crow or Portsmouth in
Hackney, London Middlesex etc. etc.
Regards
David
