Yes I have come across this both on my husband's side which even goes on to his brother having his mum's maiden name, & on my side well the person seems to be on my side so yes it not uncommon

Yes, it seems to have been somewhat common, at least in my searching.

I have an Annie Woodward ADAMS in my tree - strange middle name for a girl.
But once I found the parents marriage, I found out the mother's maiden name
was Woodward

In my own family there is an Isabelle Erkert Jack MacKenzie (the poor soul
having to grow up with a name like that) but it was her grandfathers' names
