Some most interesting stories Delia

I used to visit rels when a kid - listened intently to their
recollections - sadly forgot to put a plug in other ear and out it all
went.
Unfortunately I came to OZ in 1966 and was of touch with them all

First I wondered about origins/meaning of my LANKSHEAR name and went off
to NSW State Library - found a couple of surname books and no mention.
As I left the magnificent 19th century edifice I looked at the beautiful
ceilings in the entrance - a loud noise - I had just walked through the
rope fence around the priceless mosaics on the floor - a quick retreat
and years before I ventured back to find they actually have a FH section
with GRO and many other goodies

Then my wife's nephew's new wife wanted me to record for her a family
group sheet - ghastly thought paperwork - why not do it all in a
computer. She had a website MyFamily.com and we all started what we knew
in it - nastily this "Free" site suddenly wanted us to pay them and
locked us out - however I am most pleased with Rootsweb - in the same
business I know but they understand the "value" to the overall genealogy
business of having "us" wanting to publish what we have found.

I think end of 2000 I found LDS site and searched for LANKSHEAR and
found interesting variations like
Alice LANCKESHEIRE Shropshire 1615
Agnes LONKERSCHIER Halifax 1546
Thomas LANKASHEERE from Manchester married Elizabeth DRAKE 1645 in
Tottenham
I have not yet linked to any of these ...........

Then 2001 I was in hospital for a month and when I came out I searched
for the notes my mother left me on what she knew and then I found London
List and message boards on Rootsweb and Genforum and Family Tree
Magazine and shelf 929 in the library off I went.

From message boards I shortly found cousins who sent me a tree with
LANKSHEAR back to 1746 in Oxford - they did not understand my father's
family but grandfather was there - I joined Oxford list and more cousins
were found and I was most happy to get back another generation to 1713
Robert LANCHISHEAR married Frances DAWSON.
It seems clear that Robert or his ancestors came from LANCASHIRE and
being foreigners were named from home county
and so back to the tree

Many Thanks to all the folk who have helped me over the last few years
