Very quick response from them! This is their reply -
"Our project was funded by NOF (the New Opportunities Fund) for 3 years and this ended in October 2004. Under the terms of the funding we have to keep the site going for another 3 years and keep it as a free access site during this period.
We have been looking for further possible sources of funds, in the hopes of being able to expand the holdings, but so far we do not have any additional funding. An uncertain future, then after the next 3 years, but we know that the site is useful and popular and we hope to be able to continue to make the data available."
So everything okay for the moment. I think before anyone grumbles about another site 'possibly' charging in the future we should be grateful for the ease of access to many sources on the net, whether we pay or not. If you translate it into finding physical location of sources, working out transport, cost of transport, the time it would take, or paying a researcher, etc, I think we're all incredibly lucky to be living in an age where so much material is accessible online.
Just a few thoughts!
Cheers
Andy
