Hi All

Thanks for all the responses and I am sorry about the hornets nest I
stirred-up.

Based on some of the responses to the above topic I have received, I intend
to write to the diocesan bishop of Westminster (who happens to be Cardinal
Cormac Murphy-O'Connor) to clarify the current and future policy of the
catholic church in the UK on this matter.

I will discuss the following points:

A) That the records of births, marriages and deaths are available via the
GRO anyway, therefore privacy is not enforceable.

B) That commercial enterprises would be willing to undertake the copying and
compiling of catholic parish records, if the volume of research requests are
overwhelming individual parish priests.

As the topic is now closed, please contact me off-list, if anyone has any
additional points that they would like to make.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Chris Coomber

Hi All

I asked this question several weeks ago, and after writing to the parish
priest of the English Martyrs Church, I received a disappointing reply.

He will not allow anyone access to the parish records for the following
reasons:

1) Privacy of the individuals involved (over 100 years ago?)
2) The volume of requests he has received in recent times.

Therefore I have been thwarted in this direction for the moment, and must
rely on picking the right GRO record to pick-off ancestors.

Does anyone have any info, on the present and future policy of the Catholic
Church with regard to such records?

Many thanks for everyone's response in the past.

Chris

Hi All

Can anyone suggest a route for obtaining access to the Church records of a
Catholic church (particularly Baptism).

I am particularly interested in accessing the records of the "Church of the
English Martyrs" situated near the Royal Mint and the Tower of London.
