You don't say who "they" are, but you may be able to get a cheaper copy
by contacting the Surrey History Centre:

Others may be able to give better advice based on the time, place and
newspaper in question (with which I have no experience), but I'd usually
be prepared to take a chance on a death notice, as they will sometimes
name family members or give other useful information.
Or you may just get a simple notice "On the xxth date, Mr Henry Edward
Paul, at his residence, aged xx".
If you dont get any more useful answers than this one, it may be worth
hunting around on the web for death notices from a similar period, from
similar newspapers, to get a better indication of what they may contain.
