I have now been about a dozen times and still feel quite like a newbie as
each time you go you may looking for different information. The staff are
very helpful, but the one aid I found was to buy a book about what I was
researching. For instance I bought tracing your Navel ancestors for
£14.99 - the best money I have spent for a long time. I bought because I
noticed the staff consulting the book when advising me and without it I am
sure I would not have made as much progress as I have as quickly. Each
member of staff seems to have expertise in a different area, so you have to
be lucky to get to talk to the one with the same expertise as you are
researching. Yesterday I was reading original letters written by my gggg
grandfather - I found the references in the book. With the book I found it
easier to search on the web before I went and was far more organised.
Remember if you have a digital camera to take it - it is quite expensive to
get scanned images of documents, so buying the book and taking a camera is
cheaper in the long run.
Good luck
Denise

I haven't been to Kew yet but have been to both the Gloucester and Bristol
Records office and know the feeling! I achieved very little. The staff
were very helpful but busy. There was so much information to search I
didn't know where to start. Does anyone have any hints on what to do, I
will be travelling from the West country for the day so do not want to waste
the day.
