Hi Claire

The subscription options to The Genealogist are indeed complicated. Which
you should choose (if any) depends very much on your individual
circumstances. But the basic principle is that the more you buy the better
the value. The shortest all-inclusive subscription (don't forget this gives
you access to the GRO index as well as census indexes) is for a quarter
(£24.95), but obviously it gets cheaper if you sign up for longer.
Subscriptions to individual indexes (pay-per-view) are very expensive by
comparison, but obviously if you are absolutely sure that you only need to
look at one county for one census year then it would be cheaper for you.

The Genealogist's 1841 offering does not at present include images (though
some of their other census years do). This is a real disadvantage and you
should bear it in mind when you make your choice. An index is only ever an
aid to viewing the actual record. S&N (The Genealogist's sister company)
sell the actual images on disc, as do Stepping Stones. Archive CD Books
have them in the pipeline (and I believe theirs will be available in smaller
chunks). But I think only S&N include the street index (pretty much vital
IMO).

There are a great many organisations now competing for our money in the
provision of census and BMD data. There are pros and cons to all of them,
so do think carefully before parting with your money. There is good reason
to believe that Ancestry will have 1841 online in 2006, British Origins have
a number of counties already but no news about when London will appear.
1837online are promising another census year soon (I expect that will be
1851 but I don't know for sure).

Hope some of this helps!

Caroline
