In 1861 census I found James Crowther listed as a pensioner and living
on Clayton Rd and he really did fit very closely to the James Crowther I
was looking for.

So I ordered the death certificate for James Joseph Crowther who died in
1861 and today I received it.

Under the occupation it stated: Superannuated Laborer (East India
Company)

My question is that according to my James Crowther's children
christening records, James was listed as an Army person in 1806 to 1815
and in 1817 was listed as a Gentleman, could James then start working
for the East India Company and be a Superannuated Laborer and what is a
Superannuated Laborer?
