It's a pity about Heathrow, because that is by far the nearest airport to
Kew, so a cab wouldn't have been too expensive to take you straight there.
Gatwick would probably be your next best bet, though if you are using public
transport you will still have to go into central London (Victoria) and out
again to reach Kew, so don't rule out Stansted or Luton if they work out a
lot cheaper or the times are much more convenient.
