My map of the hundreds of bombings in Walthamstow during WW2 (In War Over
Walthamstow: The Story Of Civil defence by Ross Wyld) shows only one bombing
on Pearl Avenue.
A parachute mine exploded on the junction of Jewel Road, Pearl Road and
Forest Road, Walthamstow at 10.30 PM on 18th September 1940.
At 10.30 PM on the same night, a parachute mine exploded on the nearby
opposite corner, that of Wynn Avenue with Forest Road and this double
bombing caused widespread devastation. I would have thought nearby Brookdale
Road must have been affected by this.
During the bombing, six persons were killed and 5 others posted missing,
presumed killed, a further six casualties were taken to hospital - possibly
by my mother, Kathy BRYAN, who, aged 19, had recently joined Walthamstow's
civil defence teams as ambulance driver. There were a further 21 other
casualties in addition to those taken to hospital or killed.
1940 is a few years earlier than you state, so it may be that there was a
later bombing of the area which isn't recorded in the book - yet I believe
the map is supposed to be a comprehensive one and no other bombings of Pearl
or Jewel Roads are shown.
There is now a Baptist church on Greenleaf Road, which adjacent to Pearl
Road, I'm not sure whether or not there was a church there during the war.
Is a church on Brookdale Road and one very near Pearl Road, though I'm not
sure if these were there at the time.
The only church I know of in Walthamstow which suffered bomb damage was St
It was fortunate I saw this, I've not been active on the list for some time
due to family illness. This is the first time I've paid attention to
postings for a while and the first one I looked at was yours!
