Catholic marriages were not valid prior to 1837; invalid marriages would
mean children were illegitimate and other problems especially with
inheritance. Catholic couples would therefore frequently marry in both
Anglican church and in a Catholic ceremony. All too often the Catholic
entry does not survive.
