Please anyone able to help me with the following .
We have finally after many years of searching found where grgrandfather was
census 1881 .
He was 18 days short of his 30th birthday ( b 1851 ) aboard the navy ship
" BELLEISLE " ( have record of ship )
He was aboard ship for 9mths then dis charged
Character : - Exemp
If Dis -charged , Whither & for what cause: - Shore order & request
This ship seems to be a sort of training ship this we found on Google /
Wikipedia .
What we would like to know is where the ship was on census night -
Ireland ???
A list of crew and others an board .
Most of all why would a man of nearly 30 yrs suddenly become a seaman for 9
mths , did he serve on a ship earlier and if so where would we find this
record. Was he a reservist ?? if so would he not require some sort of
training to become a seaman . My daughter a writer in the navy for a number
of years thinks it is all very odd .
I found the above record on "Documents on Line " which included birth
date and where born and his height , colour : eyes , hair & complexion .
On all records we have for 1871 , census and when married June 1871 ( wife b
Romford ) and birth of dau Nov 1871 show he was a servant/ valet for the
Maharajah Duleep Singh at " Elveden Estate "
We know very little about him between 1861 & 1871 other than he and his
brother and sister were orphaned and lived with their widowed gran1861 .
Now having found this 1881 record it seems to raise more questions than it
answers
Help Please, sorry this is so long .
