He was possibly illegitimate and "invented" a father for the sake of
appearances when he got married. It was quite a common occurence.

It's also possible that your Edward did have a middle name but may not
have used it or even known it.

Have a look in the 1881 census for a 6 year old (+/- 1) Edward living
with only a mother or with grandparents.
