Hallo Hazel
Richard Emerton in 1851 Census
I think this might be your Richard. Harlington is in Bedfordshire. It is not too far from Luton, in Hertfordshire, which was the centre for straw plaiting. The flat straw plaits were stitched together to form straw hats, or baskets etc.
I cannot find Sarah in the 1871 census so perhaps she died and he had re-married. There are only 3 Sarah Emertons in the England census, a widow and two women with husbands not named Richard.
Brixton is in Lambeth.

I have a letter from England to Australia which says Uncle Richard's wife is still at Brixton.
This refers to Richard EMERTON b. 1816 bt Harlington s/o Edward EMERTON & Mary Ann WICKS.
Apart from his baptism and this part of the letter I have no other info on him or his wife/family. This would appear Richard is deceased.
The letter would also indicate the closest census being 1871 but no EMERTON at Brixton. Would really love some geographical help as to what other places could be classed as Brixton.
Many thanks
Hazel

Always after SMITH/EMERTON from the East Bedfont/Harmondsworth/Hayes/Harlington area.
