I believe obtaining an "International money order or cheque or draft" in
pounds sterling should present no difficulty in most countries. Two
possibilities may be:

Ruesch International and International Currency Express.

You should find their web sites via a search engine.

The UK banks have no plans to phase out the use of cheques by as early as
2012 ! Any plan must be much longer term and, as I undertsand, there are at
present no clearly agreed propopals for a replacement method.
