Hi Robin,

I have an instance in my own family research where the husband was recorded as a "widower" in the 1901 census, and his wife was alive, although not well, in a lunatic asylum about 10 milesaway. she actually ended up outliving him by a number of years!

I'm guessing you haven't tried finding her in the 1871 or later censuses as you considered her as having died. I'm not saying this happened in your case, but it's well worth checking out.
