Alexis Thibodeau born abt. 1723 & Marie-Anne Blanchard died abt Feb. 17
1762. (SJO-3, 25 &26 also SJO-85, 5)
Orphaned at an early age and was adopted by General Phillip Schuyler of New
York and raised by this family. Henri was allowed to maintain his family
name with the spelling of Thibodaux.
In about 1793 Henri arrived in Louisiana from New York, settled near St.
James Parish, where he married Felicite Bonvillain and they had 2 sons.
In 1800 following the death of his wife Felicite, Henri married Brigitte
Belanger and they produced 3 sons. Henri and Brigitte moved to Lafourche
Parish, to an area that would eventually bear his name.
At this new home Henri would build his "Sainte Brigitte" sugar plantation,
located 5 miles south of then Thibodauxville; this plantation eventually
comprised of 1,720 acres on both sides of the upper Terrebonne Bayou. In
1860 this plantation was worked by 177 slaves under the supervision of
Henri's sons.
Henri was very successful in politics, serving as Provisional Governor of
Louisiana.
